2019 Book Look

I am excited to talk books today! Do you keep track of the books you read? Back in the day BK (Before Kids) when I was loyally committed to a book club, I would keep track of each book in a small notebook and give each title a rating from 1 to 10*.

As life moved on with young kids, book club morphed into a once a month (unless the kids were sick, which was often) wine visit with friends as we compared notes about our babies’ development, yawned a few times, and promised that we really would read the book for the next month. Needless to say, I lost track of all the books I sort-of read during that time. We finally let book club go with the promise to pick it back up sometime down the road.

Though I still have some ways to travel on the Back to Book Club Commitment Road, I have finally gotten back to recording what I’ve read. Because of this, I can actually enjoy a book look from the year and share some of my favorites with you. What are your loved titles?

*I remember giving two 10’s – To Kill a Mockingbird (obviously) and The Red Tent

My book list is by no means up-to-date. Some titles are current and were published this year, but many were finally read after being on my bookshelf for a long while. I hope you will enjoy.

Favorite historical fiction: The Nightingale

I loved this WWII story and the sisters who starred as the main characters. This book was a sensory experience, in addition to a powerful tale.

Favorite thriller: The Woman in the Window

I am not a thriller reader, but this book was captivating. It was not gore and knife blades; rather, it was a psychological story that kept me guessing. A fun read.

Favorite Thought-Provoker: Refugee

This young adult book is worth a read regardless of age. It tells the story of three children, each from a different place and a different time. Though partly historical, it is all, sadly, incredibly relevant today.

Favorite Humorous Read: Class Mom

Class Mom: Laurie Gelman: 9781250192561 ...
Fellow moms, this is just funny. This is an irreverent peek at the role of a PTO mama who is not quite a white picket fence parent.

Favorite Book of Essays: I Miss You When I Blink

I am a sucker for essays and short stories. I love how this genre is part story-telling and part memoir. Essays connect us. This collection makes you laugh, cringe, and think through seasons of life.

Favorite Chick-Lit: One Day in December

This is not your typical sugar sweet, predictable chick lit book. It is more of a story of what could have been, regrets, mistakes, and second chances. I loved it. I normally pass along easy romantic reads without thinking about them again, but this one I kept on my shelf. I am hoping to forget a little and read it again sometime.

Favorite Seasonal: Finding Christmas

Finding Christmas: A Novel: Karen ...
This, on the other hand, is definitely sugar sweet. You must have one per season. It is cute and made me want to eat a gingerbread cookie as I read.

Favorite Overall: Where the Crawdads Sing

This one wins. So beautiful and perfectly paced. The setting sings, and I could not help but become Kya’s most loyal fan. If you choose one to open between now and 2020, this is it. Enjoy.

And, so my fellow readers, I hope you are looking forward to a new year of reading and a new stack of books. I hope you are fondly recalling your favorite titles of the past year, and I hope you are sharing them with your best friends. Happy reading.
