Family Fun Mom Life Recipes to Love

September Celebrations in Review

September 29, 2019

One of my favorite months is September. I love its promise of fall and cozy days.

This year, September 1st felt nothing like autumn. In fact, it was close to 90 degrees, and we felt like racing right back to the summer swimming pool. Harper and I decided that we would let the calendar inspire us, rather than the weather. So, we got out all of our fall boxes and started to decorate. It was out with the summer flowers and in with the fall leaves.

Another September celebration was reaping the glorious reward of being part of a local CSA fruit share. This month, we indulged in peaches and pears, and we just brought home a huge box of apples.

These Galas are just the right size for kids’ lunchboxes. Harper and Jameson have been crunching on them since the box arrived last week. Today, however, they got warmed and mushed and loved into homemade cinnamon applesauce.

Not Harper and Jameson … the apples.

There is such comfort in this. It makes the house smell wonderful, and it makes our bellies happy. Here is a simple but delicious recipe:

Homemade Cinnamon Applesauce

  • 10-12 apples (I have used Gala, Honeycrisp, and Pink Lady), peeled and cubed
  • 1.5 C water
  • 1/2 C sugar
  • 1.5 tsp cinnamon

In a saucepan, combine all of the ingredients. Let cook over medium heat for 20 minutes until apples are soft and tender. Allow to cool for a few minutes, and then press with a potato masher or an immersion blender. Yum.

Yet another celebration this month was that Jason and I both got to be guest readers in Harper’s classroom. It’s not often we get the time off during the day to volunteer at the kids’ school. It was a treat! I miss reading to little ones. My fifth graders still love a good story, but it’s not quite as magical. I chose to stay with I am obsessed with fall themed books while Jason went with silly and winter. We like to keep those second graders guessing. We read these four books, and we recommend them all:

September wrapped up on a sweet note. Today, we celebrated our anniversary! Twelve years ago, we got married on a slightly snowy fall day in the Colorado mountains. It was perfect and lovely, and we feel incredibly fortunate to have such a fulfilling and lovely life together. To honor today, we had family photos taken. No doubt there will be better photos coming soon … like real, professional ones … but here are a few as I annoyingly leaned over the photographer’s shoulder with my phone.

And for some throwback fun … blur and all. This is what happens when I try to take a photo of an actual photograph (who has those anymore?).

To my husband, may we have many more loving, joyous, adventurous, and beautiful years together ahead. I can’t to see what’s in store.

I hope your September was lovely. As much as I love this month, I may love October even more. Sixty-degree days, falling leaves, and pumpkin everything. Yes, please.

Enjoy, my friends.
