Family Fun Mom Life

A Day in the Life

January 13, 2020

Do you ever wonder what others are doing at this very moment? As you unload the dishwasher, do you catch yourself asking what your brother or best friend is doing? I do. In the business of this life we live, we tend to be good about sharing our major events or celebrations. Yet, I know that my day to day living is smaller. It is the steady tick of the minutiae that I count on as I move from dawn to dusk. To that end, I thought it might be fun to document a little bit of a typical Sunday around here. Join me if you’d like.

Monday, Sunday, Saturday, Tuesday … it does not matter which day it is. We are up early. Sunday, my eyes opened around 5:14 a.m. I gloriously laid there for a while until I heard the patter of Jameson’s footsteps a short bit later. He snuggled in beside me and asked if it was a “stay home day.” I was so glad to say yes. Before long, Harper strolled in with her blanket and tucked in on the other side of me. Sigh … nothing better than that. Jason got up to start the coffee, and soon I was perched up enjoying some java and reading my book in bed.

Because we are early risers, we set a soft rule in the house that breakfast is not served before 7. That gives us plenty of coffee, snuggle, and book time before we even have to set foot outside the bedroom and actually start our day. After instant oatmeal, the kiddos played and I got started on meal planning for the week. I dug out two cookbooks, decided on a few recipes, and jotted my list while finishing a second cup of joe.

Then, it was time for the gym. I love my local Y. Such good people! Today I decided on the elliptical, abs, and pushups. I know what you are thinking. Katie has no abs! This is true. It’s why crunches are a necessary evil.

The sun was shining brightly Sunday morning on my drive home. When I arrived, Harper and Jameson were ready for some fresh air. After stealing some of my morning snack, Jameson put his Cool Cat outfit on and strutted out to play.

We scootered and biked and play in kinetic sand. We said bye to Daddy as he went out for his morning exercise, and our neighbors joined us for some play.

When Jason got back from his run, Harper and I decided we had better hit up the grocery store so we would have food to eat for lunch. Our pantry was looking sad! Off we went with my morning list. Harper is the absolute best shopping assistant ever. I am pretty certain I could send her into the store by herself, and she would tackle that list like a boss.

After unloading groceries and munching on lunch, it was quiet time in the house. Jameson had the sniffles, so he laid down while Harper worked on her math homework. Meanwhile, Jason and I tackled the Everest of laundry in our room.

At least folding laundry gave me an excuse to binge watch Grey’s Anatomy. Bless Jason’s heart; he watched with me.

Next, Harper helped me make some granola bars for the week ahead. While those were in the oven, I spread out my schoolwork and got planning and grading for the week.

Mid afternoon, Daddy and Harper decided to head off to Jason’s school to finish setting up his Ninja Course while Jameson snoozed. I enjoyed a fresh granola bar and a cup of tea until my little guy got up. His sniffles were full-fledged cold symptoms at that point. I decided I better get him to help me clean up the playroom before he fully succumbed. It was an unfortunate sight to behold (Jameson’s nose and the playroom).

Fortunately, it didn’t take long, and we made good progress!

It is crazy how fast weekend days go. Quite suddenly, or so it felt, the sun was setting and it was time to make dinner. Simple food for that evening – salad and broccoli parmesan pasta. Afterward, we caught up on homework and reading before daddy and Harper watched the football game and finished folding yet another load of laundry. Meanwhile, Jameson snuggled in to watch The Grinch, his current favorite.

We set out lunchboxes and made the coffee for the next day.

Harper and Jameson were wiped after a sweet day. Teeth brushed, check. Lotion on, check. Nighttime stories, check. In bed by 7:30, check. Then, Jason I romantically lisp-chatted over Crest white strips while I set out my morning gym clothes.

Sunday ended with a little more work for both of us. I did a bit of professional development that is on tap in my school this year, while Jason worked on “maybe sub plans” in case our little handsome woke with a fever.

It was lights out at 10 p.m. (and this was late for us). Yawn.

There you have it, so blissfully boring. A day in the Sunday life. Have a most happy and healthy week ahead.
