Jameson with his favorite person

Jason spent a year teaching English in Japan in 2001. He spent most of his time in a town called Kawanishi, just north of Osaka. While there, he traveled regularly via the Shinkansen and took in Kyoto, Tokyo, and Okinawa. He also climbed Mt. Fuji, saw a World Cup game, took a dip in the bath houses, and got to enjoy the cherry blossoms. He even sang karaoke, which none of us can quite imagine.

There has been a box of Japanese items in our basement for years and years- things that Jason brought home with him from his year abroad. We were excited to use some of them to decorate for Jameson, who has wanted to learn Japanese and to take a trip to Japan for many years now. We hope to get him there someday. But, for now, we brought a bit of it home to him.

Jason got many of the fans from baseball games in Japan. These are popular souvenirs at games, used for cooling off but also for showing team colors. The Kanji on the left reads “Happy Birthday, 9 years old.” Jason wore the kimono at a spring sake festival.
Jameson loves drawing and watching anime, too.
He loves the big hair that anime characters have.

Jameson’s morning started with blueberry monkey bread (ahem … not exactly authentic Japanese fare but delicious nonetheless 🙂 ) followed by lots of play time with his sister. After ramen for lunch, we headed off to jump at the trampoline park for a while, which is always a good time. Then, we came home to make candy sushi before heading off to meet our family for a dinner at Tokyo Joes.

“yum” … ?

We wrapped up Jameson’s big day with cake and gifts. His favorites included a new slip n’ slide, an over the door basketball hoop, new Nike goods, and some Japanese books.

Dearest Jameson, you are wholly and endlessly loved. Happy birthday!
