How are you doing today? In all things that matter, we are well. Healthy, safe, fed, warm. In things of less significance, today got a little … long.
Not that there isn’t plenty to do. I can always wash the wood floor. I certainly have work to plan. I could clean out the pantry. But. Ugh.
We had a good talk with our kids about social distancing today. They are a little nervous that we will never be allowed to be together again. We are trying to be hopeful. Harper drew this today:
It is certainly easy to ingest way too much news (guilty) and focus on why this is all tough and sad. And indeed it is.
Yet, my heart is also swelling with pride and good and all the feelings, because there are so many wonderful things happening, too. I thought I would share a few spirit-lifting ideas from around my block. Maybe you could use them around yours.
Have you ever read this book?
It is adorable and catchy and happens to be a favorite of a family down the block. They suggested we all put teddy bears in our windows, so all of the neighborhood kids could go “on a bear hunt” when they were out for walks with their families. Love this idea! Can you spot ours?
People are also starting to put up signs in their windows.
“Chalk the Walk” has become a popular way to send out positivity and keep our kiddos busy outside. The idea is to write happy messages along driveways and sidewalks for everyone to enjoy.
And we are sharing and exchanging books.
And maybe it’s just me, but do you think people are smiling more? I feel like I am waving and hello-ing to twice as many dog walkers, joggers, and bicyclists as I was before.
Of course, many of the conversations I have had lately are about people’s loved ones who are elderly. I recently told my own parents that I am feeling so grateful that they are young and independent still. My heart is breaking for people isolated in nursing homes and long term care facilities. My principal has asked for our students and kids to write letters or draw pictures and send them to these elderly people who need a little boost. If you are local and interested, here is what you need:
Life Care Center 2451 Pratt Street, Longmont, CO 80501 – Please send them care of Chris Lehto.
As we wrap up today, we are looking forward to a meal delivery from a favorite Main Street restaurant here in town – yum. I know our one dinner won’t make an economy, but if everyone plays a role, maybe we might just make a difference.
Good night, with much gratitude and hope for a new and healthy day tomorrow.
