Last week, we packed our bags and jetted west to the shores of California. We hoped for warm sand, concentrated family time, and some R&R. Lucky for us, we got a little of it all.
I feel the need to begin with a disclaimer: this trip was almost entirely planned around a specific resort that I was most curious to check out. It is a complete splurge, by no means a “reasonable” choice to stay, and we pretended to be wealthier than we actually are for a couple of nights. But, it was fabulous and lived up to our hopes! If you get the chance, YES!
We stayed north of LaJolla at The Fairmont Grand Del Mar. The resort grounds are sprawling and lovely, and each employee was kinder than the last. After a delayed travel morning and a clunky rental car pick-up experience, we were hungry and eager to explore. Our first stop was The Grille for a late lunch. The Euro game was on, so we were happy campers as we watched England win.
We checked in, explored the grounds, and hit the pool. Over the course of our stay, we enjoyed the resort’s property including the hiking trails, pools, cafes, archery, and little sitting areas to relax.
Time spent right at the hotel was truly lovely. When we did get away, we enjoyed a couple of local beaches. We visited LaJolla Shores and Del Mar and had a lovely time watching the waves, burying Jameson, reading, strolling, snacking, and observing the amazing life guards (I did not expect them to be so busy! #Gratitude).
On our last day, we gave Sea World a visit to check off a bucket list item for the kiddos: a personal visit with dolphins! Though we wish it had lasted longer, they did say it was wonderful and fascinating. Harper and Jameson were both impressed with how intelligent these sweet animals are. Along with our dolphin encounter, we rode a couple of rides and peeked some other fun marine creatures.
We shared a lot of smiles and laughs on this trip and, as always, loved our time away together. We did think a lot about the people who live in this area (Hi Eileen!!!) and frequently asked ourselves, how do they find parking?! This city is crowded!
Thanks, Cali, for a family getaway. Peace out!
Hi back to you! We had nothing but glorious sunshine until you arrived—then welcome the return of the marine layer!
Parking? It’s timing, back streets, alleys, store/café parking “behind” the storefront, willingness to pay or—-WALK instead!
Glad you enjoyed your stay—and SeaWorld. We see their fireworks across the water every night. It’s very festive!
